Balcones Distilling Texas Single Malt Finished in a Peated Whiskey Cask

To Peat or Not to Peat
Lost Lantern hand-selected this cask from Balcones Distilling in Waco, Texas. Balcones is a true pioneer. Their unique releases prove that great whiskey can be made in truly new ways.
This is an unusual one, even for the famously creative Balcones. The whiskies from a single distillation run, made from 100% Golden Promise malted barley, were aged in new American, European, and French oak for 3 years. Then those were combined and finished for 1 year and 8 months in a barrel that previously held Balcones Peated single malt whiskey. So this whiskey itself is not peated, but the finish in an ex-peated cask imparts a substantially smoky flavor of its own. This has notes of marzipan, charred graham crackers, s’mores, and smoke-roasted pears. A perfect whiskey for lovers of American single malt eager to explore the expanding boundaries of the style.
