Lost Lantern hand-selected this cask from J. Rieger & Co. The historic pre-Prohibition brand was revived in 2014 as the first Kansas City distillery in nearly a century. Today, J. Rieger & Co. makes whiskey that honors its historic legacy and celebrates the vibrant culture of Kansas City.

This straight rye whiskey was aged for 7 years in a 53-gallon barrel. It was made with 96% rye and 4% malted barley. It has a soft and creamy nose, with notes of oak, leather, and chocolate mints. The palate is grassy and minty, with robust oak, a powerful heat, and notes of mint chocolate chip ice cream. Complex and deep, this is a truly powerful rye whiskey.

About J. Rieger & Co.

Many whiskey brands claim a historic heritage… but J. Rieger & Co. has the receipts to prove it. Before Prohibition, J. Rieger & Co. was a famed Kansas City-based whiskey blender and the largest mail-order whiskey house in the United States. Sadly, the business did not last through Prohibition. But jump to 90 years later, when Ryan Maybee, one of the leading bartenders in Kansas City, opened the cocktail bar Manifesto in the basement of the Rieger Hotel and soon discovered the history of the Rieger family and its roots in the whiskey industry. He soon connected with Andy Rieger, and together they partnered up to revive the historic pre-Prohibition whiskey company for a new century. Today, J. Rieger & Co. occupies the same Kansas City neighborhood it did over a century ago. It now both sources and distills bourbon, rye whiskey, and its own signature Kansas City whiskey (blended with small amounts of Sherry), and is helping to restore the city’s historic whiskey heritage.
